Background:

The last two Conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) marked significant progress in integrating humanitarian actors addressing the impacts of climate change into this central platform for global climate action. The COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace, Getting Ahead of Disasters: A Charter on Finance Managing Risk and the Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery under the COP29 Presidency, represented historic steps toward embedding relief, recovery and peace (RRP) considerations in climate policy and action.

This year, the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) will take place in Belém, Brazil from 10 – 21 November 2025. While the focus on RRP has not been carried forward, COP30 is putting special attention on climate change adaptation and resilience across sectors and systems highlighting real-world climate solutions. Thus, it is important for the humanitarian sector to understand what this year’s COP means for climate and environment action in conflict-affected and fragile settings where we work.

In addition to the official COP schedule and negotiations, the COP30 Thematic Days  will address: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation to climate change, climate finance for developing countries, renewable energy technologies and low-carbon solutions;  preserving forests, ocean and biodiversity;  transforming agri-food systems; resilient cities and infrastructure; and climate justice and the social impacts of climate change.
