Negotiations at COP 29 in Baku came to a close on 24 November 2024. It is the most important climate decision-making forum, whose agreements and commitments can have potentially huge impacts for the people most affected by climate change. However, for the many humanitarian stakeholders who don’t directly work in the climate space, it can be difficult to find the time or opportunity to understand how it works, which decisions are most relevant, and the implications for crisis affected communities and humanitarian response.
If this sounds like you, the DEC, Climate Charter and the CALP CVA’s Climate and Environment Community of Practice (CoP) invite you to join our joint webinar, where we’ll explore what have been the main successes and challenges of the COP 29 for humanitarians. We’ll also be discussing how to better prepare for and engage with COP30 in Brazil in 2025.
During this session, the panelists will highlight what they regard as the key successes and remaining challenges after Baku COP 29, with a focus on what this means for the humanitarian sector, including in relation to relevant Climate Charter commitments. This year’s COP has been referred to as the ‘finance COP’, focusing on negotiating the New Collective Quantified Goals (NCQG), to replace the current goal of a collective $100 billion per year of climate finance provided and/or mobilized by developed countries to developing nations.
Panelists will also discuss preparations for the next COP (COP30 will be in Brazil and is set to focus on indigenous populations and agroindustry). You will also have opportunities to ask the panel questions.
If prior to this you need to understand a bit more what a COP is and the key messaging from civil societies in Baku, take some time to watch the recording of CALP’s “Unpacking BakuCOP 29” and the Climate and Environment Charter webinar: Towards COP29; Peace-Climate-Humanitarian Collective Action.
